Hand Embroidered Otomi Tenango de Doria Tablecloth
Tenango is a style of embroidery originating in the municipality of Tenango de Doria, in the state of Hidalgo, Mexico. The characteristic of these textiles is the combination of colors and the representation of flora and fauna, scenes of daily life, religion, patron saint festivals, carnival, Day of the Dead, harvest, etc. can also be represented. Embroideries are carriers of symbolic languages that express the environment, life, myths and rites, reproduced over time.
For the embroiderers, the technique is one of the identification criteria because it expresses specific knowledge of certain localities. The embroidery can last from three to seven months (depending on the size and number of drawings), even a quilt or a tablecloth can take years to finish.
